Hey Gang,
I want to take a moment to talk about my friend Rick Ketcham who we lost on Tuesday. Rick was a brilliant inker with significant credits spread across the comics industry spanning the last 20 or so years. If you ever enjoyed comics like New X-Men, New Excalibur, Dollz, Buffy, Skarr, or Runaways among many others, then you probably enjoyed Ricks work at some point. Rick was a long time collaborator and one of the go to guys for fellow studio-mate Randy Green randygreen.deviantart.com/. He also shared studio space in Greensboro NC, with John (Waki) Wycough waki2.deviantart.com/, Brian Shearer gravyboy.deviantart.com/, Kelly Yates kellyyates.deviantart.com/, Steve Bird, Robert Atkins robertatkins.deviantart.com/, & Johndell Snead, while Garry McKee II gmckee.deviantart.com/ and I would join them from Georgia at conventions under the Tsunami Studios banner.
Rick was the nicest of nice guys. He was generous and caring. He was talented and humble. He was genuinely a friendly guy. He had a tremendous work ethic. I always liked to listen to his stories about working in comics back in the 90's and early 2000's.
He was the ambassador of our studio and would often handle contacting new conventions where Tsunami was interested in setting up. He shared knowledge and technique readily with his studio-mates and aspiring inkers he met at shows. He understood the medium across the various disciplines it takes to build a comic book. When he could, he would bring us in to help out with his own work. He was fun to share a table with, and fun to ride to shows with. My wife and I once had the pleasure of spending about 9 hours in the car with him, Steve Bird and Waki, going one way to a show in Virginia and then back home and while it was a long trip, it was also very enjoyable.
I didn't get to see Rick often enough. It was usually only at shows where I spent most of my time trying to get sketches done and sell prints, but the time I did spend with him was good time. I wish I had more of it. He was a good man, a good artist and a good friend. I'll miss him.
Via Con Dios my friend.
I'll see you again.

The Struggle, the hunger and the Professionalism..
Hey Gang,
So after my post yesterday, I received some correspondence from one of my watchers talking about a difficult situation that he is currently in. I wrote back to him about my financial struggles and the transition from high school to college to adulthood and complete self-sufficiency. I thought I might detail that just incase some of you are interested in hear it because I'm interested in hearing about your journey as well. Some of us end up where we always wanted to, and some of us change course when we encounter obstacles, and some of us find ourselves in places it never occurred to look. So after reading this, if you feel like
College Starts Back Today but not for MEEEEEEEEEE!
Hey Gang,
So this time last year I was neck deep and running behind on my MFA thesis exhibition. I still had a whole semester of putting up with crap from the faculty where I went to grad school. There were a few talented people there, surrounded by a field of mediocrity hiding in Academia...I suspect this is the case in most schools. At this point I think I had maybe one poster done and I don't think I even used it...no real idea what I was going to write in my thesis defense paper, a little bit of fear and a whole lot of anger and frustration. Things worked out for me at the end of the semester...heck they went better than ok, but as th

What does your username mean? It was a nickname I got when I was younger and when I signed up for my first email back in 1998, I guess there were 849 other Pacos who got one before me so I stuck with my email address 10 years later.

Are you left or right handed? Right handed Baby...sometimes I forget I even have a left hand.
What was your first deviation? Adam Strange...

Hand Skills and Copic Questions
Hey Gang...
Long time no talk. After thesis, I needed a break from producing and that break stretched until late February. I've done three Cons since then with one coming up in Myrtle Beach in May and one in Tampa at the end of July. I've been working primarily digitally for the last 5 to 6 years and as a result, my analog skills have atrophied a bit. I'm trying to rectify that by forcing myself to do marker studies before I go to the computer.
I have a significant number of copic markers, but I've had mixed results with them and I'm curious about how some of you choose to work...
I typically treat them

I haven't been on Deviant art in a long while. It's nice to see this post as I remember Rick quite often. I can't tell you how much it meant to see you and Gary drive up for his service. I know that was a long day for you guys.
Looking forward to seeing you again at a show this year!
All the best brother!
